Passdiary FAQ

Here we have some anwsers to some common questions.
  1. Locate the .epk file on your PC and check that its file size is greater than zero.
  2. Open the file in Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (Mac).
  3. The first two lines should be plain readable text. The rest of the file should contain encrypted text — this is normal.
  4. If the file looks correct, open it in the PassDiary PC or Mac Desktop Utility downloaded from passdiary.com.
  5. If you can see your passwords inside the utility, the EPK file is good — the issue is with the import password you are entering.

Note: Make sure you are entering the same master password you used when you created the backup on your iPhone.

Note: If you see a 'corrupt file' or 'invalid file' error inside the Desktop Utility, you may be using an older version. Download the latest version from passdiary.com and try again. Click the 'About' button in the utility to check your current version.

  1. Go to passdiary.com and download the Mac Backup Utility (.dmg file, approximately 88.5 MB).
  2. Open the .dmg file and launch the PassDiary Mac Utility.
  3. If macOS blocks the app with a message about an unverified developer, do the following:
  4. Open System Settings on your Mac.
  5. Go to Privacy & Security.
  6. Scroll down and click Open Anyway next to the PassDiary app.
  7. Once the app opens, use the Open EPK File option inside the utility to load your backup file.
  8. You will then be able to view all your passwords and export them to Excel or a document if needed.

Note: The Mac utility is built with Java and cannot be submitted to the Mac App Store. It must be downloaded directly from passdiary.com.

Restore Passwords:
  1. Check whether you have previously taken an external backup in the form of an EPK file. This is the only way to restore lost password data.
  2. If you have an EPK file, restore it using the PassDiary Desktop Utility available at passdiary.com.
  3. If you are on Android, follow the import steps at: https://passdiary.com/pasdiary-password-manager-backup-utility.html

Note: PassDiary does not store any data on its servers or in iCloud. All data lives only on your device. Regular external backups (EPK files) are essential.

How to Take a Backup:
  1. Open PassDiary on your phone.
  2. Go to Settings and select the Export / Backup option.
  3. Export the EPK backup file:
  4. On Android: Export the EPK file to your PC or Mac using the PassDiary Desktop Utility (Wi-Fi).
  5. On iOS: Export the EPK file to your PC or Mac using the PassDiary Desktop Utility (Wi-Fi), or email the EPK file to yourself.
  6. Store the EPK file in a safe location.
  1. Do NOT delete or uninstall the app — doing so will permanently erase your data.
  2. Do NOT reinstall the app for the same reason.
  3. Reboot your phone once and check if the passwords appear correctly.
  4. Wait for the next PassDiary app update, which will include a fix for this issue. It may take a few days.

Note: If you have a previous EPK backup, you can restore from it after the update is released.

  1. Go to your iPhone Settings > Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) and make sure Face ID / Touch ID is set up and working.
  2. Open PassDiary. When it prompts for Face ID / Touch ID, tap YES to authenticate.
  3. Once inside the app, tap the Settings button in the bottom-left corner.
  4. Select Change Password.
  5. Select Authenticate and Change via Touch/Face ID.
  6. Authenticate with your Face ID or Touch ID.
  7. You will then see a screen to enter and confirm a new password. Enter your new password and tap Save.

  1. Both devices must be connected to the SAME Wi-Fi network. This is the most common reason devices cannot find each other.
  2. Connect both iPhone and iPad to the same Wi-Fi network.
  3. Open PassDiary on both devices.
  4. On the source device, go to Settings and select iOS to iOS Transfer.
  5. The iOS to iOS transfer feature is a one-time paid unlock ($1). Tap Buy Now inside the app to activate it. If you have already purchased it, tap Restore.
  1. On your old phone, open PassDiary and export your data as an EPK backup file. On Android, the export is done via Wi-Fi using the PassDiary Desktop Utility on your PC or Mac.
  2. Install PassDiary on your new phone.
  3. Download the PassDiary Desktop Utility from passdiary.com onto your PC or Mac.
  4. Connect your new phone to your computer.
  5. Open the Desktop Utility and use the Import / Restore option to transfer the EPK file to your new phone.
  6. Enter your master password when prompted to complete the restore.

  1. Go to System Settings on your Mac.
  2. Click on Privacy & Security.
  3. Scroll down — you will see a message about PassDiary being blocked.
  4. Click 'Open Anyway'.
  5. The utility will now open normally.

This is one of the most common setup issues. Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1 — Turn off your Firewall:
  1. Windows: Turn off Windows Firewall AND your antivirus firewall.
  2. Mac: Go to Settings > Security > Firewall > click Stop.
Step 2 — Fix your Wi-Fi connection:
  1. Make sure your phone and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Disable Mobile Data / Cellular on your iPhone if it is enabled.
  3. Turn OFF Wi-Fi on your phone, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back ON.
  4. Check your phone's IP address: go to Settings > Wi-Fi > tap your network > check IP Address. It should be in the format 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x.
  5. If the IP address is NOT in that format, disconnect from Wi-Fi, restart your phone, reconnect to Wi-Fi, and check again.
Step 3 — Reconnect:
  1. Close the PassDiary app on your phone completely.
  2. Restart the Desktop Utility on your computer.
  3. Open PassDiary on your phone and try connecting again.
  4. In the Desktop Utility, click 'Select Computer', then 'Add', enter your computer's IP address or name, and click Connect.

Note: If connecting by computer name fails, try using the IP address instead. You can find your computer's IP address in Network Settings.

This is a security feature, not a bug. PassDiary automatically erases all stored data after the maximum number of failed login attempts. This protects your passwords if your phone is lost or stolen.

Recovering Data:

Unfortunately, once the data is wiped due to exceeded password attempts, it cannot be recovered directly from the app.

  1. If you have previously taken an external backup (EPK file), you can restore your passwords using the PassDiary Desktop Utility.
  2. If no backup was taken, the data cannot be recovered. PassDiary does not store data on any server or in iCloud.

Always keep a regular EPK backup to protect your data.

How to avoid this in the future:
  1. Set up Face ID or Touch ID on your iPhone so you can always get in without typing your password.
  2. Keep at least one current EPK backup stored safely on your PC, Mac, or email.

Deleting the app permanently erases all locally stored password data. PassDiary does not back up data to iCloud or any server automatically. Data recovery is only possible if you took an external EPK backup before deleting the app.

If you have an EPK backup file:
  1. Re-install PassDiary from the App Store (iOS) on your phone.
  2. Download the PassDiary Desktop Utility from passdiary.com on your PC or Mac.
  3. Connect your phone to the Desktop Utility over Wi-Fi.
  4. Use the Import / Restore option and select your EPK backup file.
  5. Enter the master password you used when the backup was created.
  6. Your passwords will be restored.
If you do NOT have an EPK backup:

The data cannot be recovered. There is no way to retrieve passwords that were not backed up externally.

After reinstalling and restoring, immediately take a new EPK backup so this does not happen again.
